The preseason is an extended part of training camp and it’s a chance for coaches to experiment with the playbook and see what kind of new talent they can bring in to improve their roster. They also find out how well their scouting department has evaluated the talent they drafted in the annual NFL draft, but for the Rams and Jeff Fisher they may be left scratching their heads for some years to come.
Los Angeles traded up to take Jared Goff with the first overall selection but the preseason hasn’t quite worked the way they planned and they hope that he can progress as the season goes on. Fisher said that Goff would start the season as the #3 quarterback and that he is making strides but isn’t where they would like him to be. Goff will sit behind veteran Case Keenum and Sean Mannion to give him time to soak in the knowledge of what it takes to be a starting QB in the NFL.
Jeff Fisher and other NFL coaches understand that some players take a bit longer to transition their skills the next level and it’s not just a rational move on his part. Goff may be sitting now but later down the line he could become one of the better young quarterbacks. This is just a developmental move so don’t panic just yet Rams fans.
Jared Goff preseason stats:
22/49 44.9 comp% 232 passing yards 2 touchdowns 2 interceptions
