It’s no secret how great the Packers passing offense can be when 2 time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers is in sync with his star receivers. They have been one of the top units in the league almost every year since he took over under center.
It’s also become apparent how much more smoothly everything runs when 4th year running back Eddie Lacy is performing at the top of his game. After a setback year last season, Lacy seems to be back in shape and ready to break out again.
The Packers have hinted that they would love to maximize the run game and get Lacy even more involved. If this happens, Green Bays offense could be extremely difficult to stop, especially now that they have added a big play tight end in, Jared Cook, through free agency, and a speedster in wide receiver, Trevor Davis, through the draft.
The Packers have also quietly improved their defense, an area that has been mainly seen as a weakness for the majority of the time Rodgers has been in the league.
The main area of improvement comes in the defensive backfield where the Packers have drafted very well over the last couple of years. The unit is lead by versatile 3rd year safety, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, who is quickly developing into a star and a leader both on and off the field and is adept in dropping back in coverage and moving into the box to stuff the run.
The middle of this year’s draft featured two linebackers, as the Packers scooped up, Kyler Fackrell and Blake Martinez, in the third and fourth round respectively. If these players develop quickly they will help solidify the future and the Packers plan to move Clay Matthews back out to the edge where he is the most comfortable and effective.
The Packers defensive line may be the biggest question mark for this unit, if not for the team as a whole, they have the talent but are still trying to work out the chemistry after losing, B.J. Raji, for at least one year. If they can manage to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks, they could prove to not only be serviceable but could evolve into a strength for this team.
The other key factor is the offensive line, which may just be one of the best in the league when they are at full strength and healthy. This year they should be deeper, if not better all together, after Green Bay drafted a pair of left tackles to protect against potential free agent losses next season. If these guys can keep Rodgers erect and bust open a few holes they will be the starting point for the second dimension.
However, the key to that is still in the hands of Lacy who rushed for over 1,100 yards and at least 9 TDs in each of his first two years, before falling off drastically last season. He is still one of the toughest backs to bring down and when he is affectively following up his one step cut backs with an explosive burst through the hole, he is among the most dangerous runners in the game.
When he is in rumble mode, he makes everyone on both sides of the ball more effective, as he helps control the speed and tempo of the game.
Barring any surprise injuries or suspension the Packers are on their way to be definite Super Bowl contenders in 2016 and for many years into the future.
